Sixth form work experience

We currently offer a three day hospital work experience placement for students in Year 12 or above who are hoping to pursue a career as a doctor. The aim of the placement is to provide some insight into medical undergraduate education, what it is like to be a junior hospital doctor and also to appreciate what it is like to be a patient. Students will also gain understanding into the role of nurses, find out what patients believe makes a good doctor/nurse, and gain exposure to the workings of a busy district general hospital. The placement will provide valuable information for personal statements and interviews.

Please note that the dress code for the attachment is smart, and that a professional standard of behaviour is expected throughout.

To be eligible, you must be a student in the Lower Sixth Form of a school or college within East Lancashire, or you must live within the area. East Lancashire is defined as that geographical area for which Royal Blackburn Hospital would be the local, serving hospital. Please note that we cannot accept applications from students at schools or colleges outside this area unless the student lives within East Lancashire, or from students in years below the Sixth Form. Applicants must have the support of their school or college.

Please note that the Department of Undergraduate Education only offers work experience for students interested in a career in Medicine. We cannot offer placements in allied health professions such as nursing or pharmacy.

Please also note that the DUE is responsible for ALL work experience placements in Medicine at the Trust and all requests for such must be channelled through ourselves. Students MUST NOT approach consultants or other staff directly to request placements or shadowing, or accept a placement that has been offered via any other route.
