Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Undergraduate Education at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The DUE has been running a highly successful student programme for many years and we are continually expanding and improving the service we offer to medical students. We are affiliated to the University of Manchester Medical School with particular links to the base hospitals of Salford Royal Foundation Trust and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust. We also have extremely strong links with Primary Care and work closely with our colleagues in the community to provide an integrated approach to education across the Primary and Secondary care sectors.
We are proud to say that we have an established reputation for providing high quality, innovative teaching and many students return to us year after year as they progress through their training. Many will eventually return to live and work in East Lancashire. You can read what some of our students have to say about us by visiting our testimonials page.
We currently offer the following range of modules and placements:
If you are a student who is interested in applying for any of the above, please click on the relevant link above for more information, or you are always welcome to contact the department directly.
The Director of Undergraduate Education is Dr Damien Lynch who is a Consultant in Gastroenterology and who has many years of experience within Undergraduate Education. He is assisted by a large, enthusiastic and skilled group of tutors and staff who run the various individual modules. You can find out more about the Undergraduate team on our Staff page.
The DUE is based in the Learning Centre at Royal Blackburn Hospital but we have students working and learning in a whole range of settings across East Lancashire in both primary and secondary care. The Learning Centre is a modern, purpose-built building with classrooms, Skills Laboratory, Patient Simulator and state-of-the-art library and IT Suite. You can see more of the facilities we can offer students or you can also visit the main website for the hospital Trust.
Here at the DUE we aim for quality not quantity – although we offer a wide range of attachments we ensure that we only ever place small numbers of students into each clinical area. So students can be sure of a wide exposure to patients and clinical experience, and become valued members of the team, not just another face in the crowd.
If you do apply to come to the DUE for an attachment, you will be assured of a warm welcome, friendly staff, and a top-quality placement. So what are you waiting for?!
